The exercise of yoga is valuable for entire mankind and gives
way to mental, physical and spiritual joy and the application
of yoga will take us towards attaining heavenly bliss. Born
in the small village of Kowshika in Karnataka on the auspicious
day of Guru Purnima in 1915, Guruji Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois,
the guru of Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute, Mysore, Karnataka,
was given instructions on the Hindu practices and Vedas from
his childhood days just like any other Brahmin boy and from
the age of 12 Guruji started taking lessons on yoga from Guru
Sri T. Krishnamacharya and after his Brahmin thread ceremony
which took place after two years, Guruji left for Mysore. After
the completion of his studies at the Sanskrit University at
the invitation of the Maharaja of Mysore, he was engaged as
the head of the Yoga Department of Sanskrit College till his
retirement in 1973.
Vamana Rishi in Yoga Korunta included lessons on Ashtanga Yoga, a very old form of Yoga. Guruji was handed over this Yoga Korunta by Sri T. Krishnamacharya. The major divisions of Ashtanga Yoga according to Guruji are:
Vinyasa: It is a method of breathing and movement and one breath corresponds to one movement. Vinyasa is aimed at the purification of the internal organs of a human body. By the practice of Vinyasa, production of sweat purifies the entire internal system of the human body. After body purification, comes the control of mind.
Tristhana: It indicates body posture, breathing system
and eye direction. These three factors cover the three purification
levels of mind, body and nervous system and are done simultaneously.
Asanas are meant for purifying, strengthening and stretching
our body parts.
The six rasas: A major portion in the process of internal purification that is taught at Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute, Mysore, Karnataka corresponds to the six rasas that tempt earthly beings. These six elements of kama, krodha, lobha, moha, mada and matsarya hide the presence of God in our heart. But with the continuous exercise of yoga at Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute with great diligence and devotion, we can destroy the existence of these rasas and attain eternal joy.
